We talked to members at our October meeting about the committee’s intention to start a program of continuous improvement targeted at intermediate and experienced fly fishers. We felt that we were already providing a lot of coaching the brand-new fishers thought the Learn to Fly fish, schools, casting day and the summer casting tuition before each meeting. We really want to give our more experienced members the opportunity to “lift their game” and catch more fish!
So, we are ready to kick off our continuous improvement Program (CIP) for 2026
The first seminar will be on Saturday 28 February at the Fish and Game offices in Johns Road and will run from 9am to 4pm.
Our presenter for this event will be Russel (Rusty) Haglund.
The aim of this training will be to lift your game to another level, with the goal of getting you into the 10% of anglers that catch 90%f the fish!!
This session is aimed at intermediate fishers right up to the very experienced anglers. If you’ve attended the clubs fly fishing school in the past 12 months this probably isn’t for you just yet.
I have had the privilege of being coached by Rusty over the last 2 years and it is fair to say that his knowledge on the subject of fly fishing is simply staggering!!
If you choose to come along to this event, you will, I am sure, leave scratching your head like I have been doing and saying……. I have been fishing for over 20 years and i did not know this stuff!!!

Fly selection and why it is critical to success…….and NO it does not need to be complex
The bugs that fish eat
Getting your fly in front of the fish (ie are your flies getting deep enough)
Getting a drag free drift……practical solutions
Presentation of Nymph, Dries and Streamers (The Streamer one will fry your brain !!! and it is simple)
Where fish hold……. It is not all about sight fishing…. You need to understand fish and where they live.
Indicators……. Some different thinking!
Fighting fish ……. are you really fighting them…. or are they just playing with you….be prepared to be shocked!!
This event will be up on Hello Club in the next day or so.
We will be charging for this event, $50 per person and this is simply because we will be paying our CIP tutors for their time and knowledge.
Tea, Coffee, snacks and lunch will be provided to all attendee
