I’m a bit slow putting anything up about this trip but it is worthy of mention. We struck perfect windless weather all weekend. Myself and Dave Reilly went down Friday morning and fished the first public access on the Grays. Saw heaps of lengthy fish but failed to hook up. Either we were slow to spot them or they spooked on the first cast. Saturday we fished the Tekapo. I thought I’d struck gold when I saw about 9 fish in a swirly back water. Eventually managed a 4lb trout but when fishing for the rest they drifted downstream and stopped right in front of me only to see they were spawning salmon. I moved on. The next day back on the Grays finally produced one of those days that restore your confidence. We were able to see fish well ahead and not only did they not spook at first cast they traveled to take your nymph. We only had the morning to fish as we had to drive home but managed 3 each for the morning.
